With Labor Day fast approaching, it seemed appropriate to talk about its history. This will be something to be proud of while you grill out and relax with your family.
Not only does Labor Day symbolize the end of Summer, it is a celebration of the hard working American. It was conceived due to the labor movement in the 19th century when labor conditions were bleak. Children worked equal hours with less pay, immigrants worked in hazardous conditions, and men were forced to work 12-hour shifts, 7 days a week just to make a basic living wage.
Strikes and rallies began to form in protest of these conditions. The purpose was to negotiate hours, pay, and conditions of work. Word spread to other industrial areas about the first Monday of September and states started passing legislation for a worker’s holiday. It wasn’t until 1894 that it became a federal holiday.
Throughout the years, there have been numerous instances where the spirit of unity and remembrance has been celebrated. For instance, the brave remembrance of those who stood up for their rights, or the various holidays that commemorate significant events and figures, like remembering MLK Jr..
AKD Law has always been a strong advocate for the community, offering support through community aid and even assisting those affected during events like Mardi Gras accidents. These moments and efforts reflect the essence of standing together for a common cause.
To this day, we celebrate the American worker and how people took a stand to make a better future for us all. AKD Law is so proud to be a part of this heritage.
